UPPER ROARING FORK- ASPEN DOWNSTREAM TO BASALT

FLOW: 1000 CFS

WATER CLARITY: Runoff is here!

OVERALL RATING: 3 out of 10 early, 5 out of 10 in the afternoons

FOOD SOURCES PRESENT:  Midges, BWOs, Caddis, Golden Stones, PMDs, Sculpins

THE LOWDOWN:  Runoff is officially here, and will steadily increase once we get hot. Don't write off the upper reaches of the Roaring Fork just yet, but choose your battles. The easiest access is in Jaffe Park, which offers multiple miles of public access.

The bug menu is super-simplified, all you need are some worms, cranefly and stonefly nymphs as the river rises. Stealth is no longer paramount as the clarity becomes poor. There hasn't been a ton of surface activity, but if you see risers, tie on your favorite caddis emerger or adult.

HATCHES: Midges 18-24, BWOs 20-22, Caddis (sporadic) 16-20, Golden Stones 4-10, PMDs (sporadic) 14-18

HINTS: Fish the soft water where your flies have time to get down in front  of the fish.

MIDDLE ROARING FORK- BASALT DOWNSTREAM TO CARBONDALE

FLOW: 1780 CFS in Basalt

WATER CONDITIONS: Clarity is poor, river has doubled in volume this week

OVERALL RATING:  2 out of 10 early, 5 out of 10 in the afternoons

FOOD SOURCES PRESENT: Midges, Caddis (sporadic), Blue Winged Olives, Golden Stones, Sculpins

THE LOWDOWN: Runoff is here, and it is steadily increasing. We are still experiencing cool weather, so there is still quite a bit of snow up high. We anticipate having floatable conditions by late June or early July.

There's not a lot of public access mid-river, but local favorites are Catherine Store, behind Crown Mountain Park, and the section along Two Rivers Road here in Basalt.

HATCHES: Blue Winged Olives 18-22, Caddis 12-18 (sporadic), PMDs (sporadic) 14-18, Golden Stones 4-10, Midges 18-24

APPROPRIATE PATTERNS

LOWER ROARING FORK- CARBONDALE DOWNSTREAM TO GLENWOOD

FLOW: 3820 in Glenwood Springs

WATER CONDITIONS: Runoff is here!

OVERALL RATING: 2 out of 10, but worth checking out late in the afternoon

FOOD SOURCES PRESENT: BWOs, Caddis, Golden Stones, Pale Morning Duns, Midges, Sculpins

THE LOW DOWN: Runoff is here, but once we string together a few hot days, the Fork will really let loose. The snowpack up the Crystal is substantial, so floating may be a bit challenging for the foreseeable future. The dry fly fishing is getting pretty awesome when conditions allow, we are seeing thick caddis hatches on bright days even though the river is pretty blown out.

For now, its just cranelfy, stonefly and San Juan Worm nymphs with a few caddis dries and nymphs, May brings real change and we are ready for spring cleaning!

Streamers are usually effective on the lower Fork, we'd suggest smaller flies and natural colors for the most part. Keys tarpon eat size 8 flies, so don't feel like you have to throw a 3/0 double articulated fly to be "streamer fishing."

We anticipate seeing floatable conditions by late June or early July this time around.

HATCHES: Blue Winged Olives 18-22, Midges 18-26, Caddis 12-18, PMDs 14-18, Golden Stones 4-10

HINTS: Generally, cloudy days tend to produce the best hatches and action
